I’m in my second year of A-Level photography now, in the first year we had to own or borrow a black and white manual film SLR camera, as this allows you to learn more about camera settings than you would using a digital on auto. We were then encouraged to have our own basica digital camera towards the end of the first year.
As photography has always been a hobby in my spare time anyway, i’ve had a Nikon D80 DSLR with 18-200mm lens since the end of GCSE photography, which is great for A Level, but not essential, you could choose to do all of the two years work in film black and white, if that’s what you are interested in.
