Is it common for credit card companies to charge a “foreign transaction fee finance charge”? | All About Money Online

I recently traveled out of the country, and used my credit card several times. On my two most recent statements, I see this foreign transaction fee finance charge. It seems ridiculous that they are charging me to use my credit card outside of the country, even if the currency does need to be converted. Is this a standard practice? Is this charge something that I can have removed? Had I known I’d be charged, I WOULD NOT have used my credit card at all. I do not recall having this fee charged to me on previous international trips.
