  1. Yes Tom it will leave your drive with no visible data on any drive or partition of any drive you format.
You can not format your System drive (the one with Windows on it) from with-in Windows, but you can format any others that are there.
You will have to either run the Recovery Partition system if your PC or Laptop has one to clear what is on the C: (Windows) partition, and it does this by formatting first then over writing the data.

  2. Simple answer: Yes. If you format the hard drive, you will have an empty drive that doesn’t have the operating system on it. You would then not be able to boot the computer from the hard drive.
More complex answer: Formatting initializes file system areas, but doesn’t overwrite user data areas. After formatting, most of the data will still be on the disk. This data can be accessed by programs that bypass the normal operating calls to the file system, and issue direct BIOS calls.
This makes it possible to recover data from formatted disks. Sometimes, it is even possible to “unformat” the disk.

  3. it depends on what u are formatting, if u are formating a partition in ur PC then it wont delete ur operating system if ur are not formating to drive which has ur operating system is in (Default is ur C:/ drive) but if u are formatting ur whole Hard Disk, EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING will be deleted, Be careful and gud luck.

  4. You lose everything on your disk, if you want to keep just your operating system boot your computer with the disk inside and boot from CD. Then select format then install the operating system, whole process takes about half hour to an hour. Hope I helped.

  5. Formatting the hard drive will remove all files, including the operating system.

  6. It erases everything. You are left with nothing but a disk that is ready to have an operating system, and files, written to it.

  7. Formatting doesn’t erase anything. It simply rewrites the File allocation table. Everything seems to disappear, but all the data is still on the surface of the disk.
