I am not sure if this is good or not, but my birthday is coming up soon and I want to get a nice digital camera I can use for photography, I already have a Nikon film camera (that was my grandpas) and I love it but I hate how I cant upload the film onto the internet and so on. I took photography in school so I know some things. Anyways is this a good camera or are there any better ones? *Links would be appreciated thanks

I suppose it is OK. I personally could not own one because it will not autofocus most of my Nikon lenses. The D40 does not have a screwdriver so it can only autofocus AF-S/I lenses.
For example, the D40 is incapable of autofocusing the very useful and affordable 50mm f1/.8.
If buying a preowned camera does not bother you I suggest that you look into the D50 or D80 instead. Much more flexible units.

“I love it but I hate how I cant upload the film onto the internet and so on”.
Why do you say that? I use an Epson V500 to convert my film into digital files. When you have a film camera you also have digital camera. Film allows you to have negatives AND digital files; the best of both worlds!
Here are 300,000 film images on the internet: http://www.flickr.com/groups/film_is_not…
(BTW, as a sugar plum bonus, many Epson V500 scanners are bundled with Photoshop Elements. Mine was. That’s an $80 value for free.)

well you could buy a cheap camera new, or a better one used.
also why not buy a film scanner so you can digitize the film and upload. cheaper than a new camera.
some of the low end cameras I find very annoying due to the limitations or automation on them, (lack of control or requirement to be double jointed to use the ruddy things)

virtually any photo lab, including even places like walmart can give you digital images on a disk when you take film in to be developed….this is 2009, not 2000 !!!! Times have changed.
you can also most certainly get prints developed and printed at the lab and then get yourself a scanner an scan the prints, or scan the negatives with a film scanner if you want to do this yourself.
I can’t see the link because the best buy site is down, but if it is a d40…to me these cameras seemed like toys…..for just a bit more you can get a fairly decent entry level digital..the nikon d60

Try this very similar question that was asked just 2 days ago.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…
And don’t bother with a Nikon D40 (read some of the answers, including mine to find out why).

And what do you mean you “cant upload the film onto the internet”??.. Of course you can!. You either take the negatives into a store and get them transferred to CD or you buy a film scanner for about £70-80 and do it yourself at home!. You can even fiddle with them in Photoshop if you like. Did you honestly think there was no way to get film images online?.

Don’t go for an DSLR if your just starting out. Start small then upgrade.
Check out Canon g10, it’s a digital camera but the features really good, the best digital camera for me too.
or if you really want an DSLR, go for the canon 100D and it’s cheap too.

Nikon D40 Was my first digital SLR and it did just fine for me. I still use it a lot. Its very easy to use and great for begging. it even has a how-to interface built into it. where the camera will tell you what each function does.
