How Can I Share My Dsl Connection With A Neighbor, But Not Allow Them Access To My Networked Computers?
I have a pretty fast DSL connection that I would like to share with my neighbors, but I don’t trust them so much that they should be able to contact my two computers (which can freely communicate on a wired ethernet connection using a broadband router).
I can use either a wired or wireless connection with my neightbors (our homes are very close).
What exact model of hardware (router, switch, hub, wireless access point, etc?) do I need to put between my network and theirs which allows any connection to the outside world but no packets to my computers? I don’t want to configure my computer, I want the networking hardware to prevent any packets from reaching my computers.
I am afraid that my neighbors may accidentally infect their computers with spyware or viruses, and I don’t want to rely on windows XP firewall, I want a hardware solution. I also don’t want my packets to be able to be sniffed by them or any wireless connection.

First it’s a violation of every DSL provider’s TOS that I know of.
If you use Wireless just set seperate SSID’s, seperate channels and a good PSK.
To do it however all you need is three routers or one good one that does subnets.
DSL < -> Router (192.168.1.1)
you can try to change the workgroup on the pc’s in your home. Or you can configure the router to block out his sharing capabality…. But i honestly wouldnt do it. If your neighbor is using to download it will really drop the speed of your download.
Don’t do it. If they want DSL, have them sign up for it. It’s only $15/more a month than dial-up.
dont even go there …….. u can be sued by ur DSL provider for doing smthin like that ….
Just set up a router such as a linksys wrt54g (wireless) and have them use a wireless card. It will assign them addresses dynamically so you don’t have to do anything. They will not be able to “sniff” packets going between your wired connection and their wireless connection.
You should firewall your own machine(s) to the the limit of course (AVG, Panda, anything but that awful Norton). If you already have one of these, good enough.
I did something similar using a linux box with 3 network cards. Gave 192.168.4.x to one machine, 192.168.1.x to my machines and set up the rules to prevent the two nets from communicating but both could still get to the internet.
Install a linux Box with three ethernets. 1 with the public adress, 1 for you and one for your neighbor. Set the firewall on the Linux Box using iptables. Make sure to block all the ports to your neighbor, only open the 80, 110, 143 and 125. Thats is let him use the internet, the mail and the segure http. You dont want them getting files and sharing with Limeware, Imesh or this things… true. Anyway, remember that if they share music the law will look for you. So block all the upper ports and take you the control over the Linux Box.
Hey… if you dont how to do that… just call me. I;m looking for a job, anyway.
