When Does Photography Become More Like Digital Art?

I don’t excactly know how to explain what I mean, so hopefully someone will get my point…
I love photography and taking pictures, and I also love using photoshop to enhance/edit them etc. So, at what point does a picture you’ve edited leave the realm of photograph and become something else?
obviously there’s no exact answer to this, I was just wondering what people say.

  1. I would say when the photo has been edited to the point that it no longer is a true depiction of anything in reality.
Sometimes this can be very nice art, and other times just a ruined photo.

  2. I know what your saying. In my opinion, when cameras became digital, It’s already left it’s own realm of photography. I took photography class and there’s nothing more self-fulfilling than loading your camera with film, developing your negatives, and making prints of it. I have nothing wrong with digital media because it’s a real good way to Network and transfer media vastly. But I do understand what your saying. I’d say it’s however you make it out to be. I think any good picture is a picture that you feel doesn’t need to be touched. One that doesn’t need to be enhanced through contrast, brightness, hues, color tones, mid-tones, etc…
It’s all up to you. Usually more higher pro-consumer cameras provide all the enhancments and adjustments you can make manually. UNlike digital hand held ones where you are limited to such adjusments..

  3. I think your image will no longer be true photography when you use digital processes to change the photo in a way that could never be achieved with traditional film. I fought digital photo when I started my studies buy now have come to embrace it for many reasons. I can shoot as much as I want without spending money on film and chemicals, and I can edit my photos in minutes when it might have taken hours to do the same thing in a darkroom. Photoshop is filled with many tools that I will never use, but the ease of color correcting and image enhancing makes photography much simpler, quicker, and cheaper. You can always tell an ameature by their over use of photoshop, but a true photographer uses it to their advantage and it has revolutionized the entire medium.

  4. In my opinion it becomes digital art when the photograph no longer looks like a photograph. Some people get carried away with Photoshop, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not but there is a point where the colors no longer look real and the image no longer looks real. That’s when I would say it’s more digital art than photography.
