the computer i have now is hard wired to the router but the router doesnt have any more jacks, its only for 1 computer. i’m getting a second desktop pretty soon and want to find out how can i split that connection to both of the computers. also there will be a big distance between the 2, and the ethernet wire will run across the house if i use the router that i have now.

Your computer is connected to a cable modem, not a router. So get yourself a wireless router, and a wireless card, that would solve your problem of having two computers using the one internet connection, and it solves your distance problem.

By the way you describe the device, I would say that it is not a router, it is a cable modem. I suggest that you get a WiFi router and a WiFi adapter for the more distant computer.
Good luck and have fun.

Is it a USB connected router? If it is, you can use ICS – Internet Connection Sharing. You’d need to set up an ethernet link between the two PCs… and then configure ICS. The help on ICS is pretty good, so follow that.
If it’s an ethernet connected router, you could buy a hub and hook it in between the router and your PC… then connect the second PC to the hub too.
Or you could buy a new router with more than 1 ethernet connection and hook it to both PCs.
Ethernet will run 100m, so the distance between your PCs shouldn’t be an issue *unless* you live in a very big house.

I think what you meant is your PC is connected to cable modem not the router.
Cable modem has only 1 jack and can be connected to a single computer only. Router cannot have just 1 jack because router’s purpose is precisely to split internet connections and share files between computers.
Usually router has at least 5 jacks at the back. One in and 4 out (for sharing up to 4 computers). So what you need to buy is a wired router.
Cable modem jack connects to the “In” jack of router and the 2 PCs connect to each of the “Out” jacks. Simple enough.
As to your complaint of huge distance the ethernet wire will run across the house, there’s not other shortcut solution to it. Anyway you can buy the wire as long as you would like it to be and is usually sold by the meters.
Wifi router is not recommended for desktop PCs if your main purpose is to avoid wiring unless mobility is your idea such as laptops since the signal decreases as you get farther from the base. So if you’re PC is, as you say, located rather far from the base station you will be disappointed with the connection.

I don’t know much about computers but I bought a wireless router for my 2 computers. It was easy to install and cost less than $100. Your original omputer has the new router and your new computer will just use on of the ethernet slots in the back. It was easy and I had a good connection even from upstairs. Hope this helps and you can find out more info about wireless routers.

Interesting case…Are u talking the right thing? I haven’t seen a router with only one port (one opening for a RJ45 jack) for years and I am pretty sure there is none in the market nowadays. When the ISP (Internet service Provider) give u the modem after you have registered for the chosen services, there is only one RJ45 Jack at the back of the modem. You need to buy a router (usually have four RJ45 jack openings at the back though) for extra Internet connection for more than two PCs either with hard-wire or wireless.
Nonetheless, you have no opening on your old router for extra Internet connection, R u planning on buying an extra Ethernet adapter ( PCI or external Ethernet ) and run with software routing? There are quite a number of 3rd party software based router if you chose not to use the one provided by the MS Window itself. It is neither logical nor economical from the technological point of view since the distance is too far as you have mentioned.
You best bet is to buy a wireless router prior to any further discussion.
Best regards
