I’m looking for totally free software that allows me to input scans of my sheet music and then convert it into an audio format that I can play using my computer (aka optical character recognition software). So far, I’ve had no luck. Can anyone help?

  1. First off, you other two people are freaking idiots.
Did he SAY he wanted to steal mp3s from the internet? NO.
He wants a program that will allow him to scan sheet music (you know, paper with lines drawn on it and little musical notes all over it like someone sitting at a piano would be looking at) into his computer that will actually recognize it as sheet music and record the notes into a midi file.
Unfortunately, finding totally FREE music scanning software is next to impossible. It’s a very “special purpose” area and the laws of supply and demand apply. I found one as cheap as $24, though:http://www.neuratron.com/photoscore.htm
Photoscore Midi Lite 5 can scan to midi file. Really that’s the limit of it’s features, but you can’t beat the price.
    And one for $49:http://www.musitek.com/midiedition.html
Smart Score midi edition is much more feature packed. It includes regular character recognition for text and lyrics, allows you to assign midi instruments to each seperate staffline (including secondary contrapuntal voices), allows you to apply up to 30 drum patterns to your song (add drum riffs), and much, much more.
Of course, you’ve probably already found both of those on your own.
You might seek-out the Audio/Visual geeks at the local college or high school. Chances are the school would have the software or at least a midi keyboard which could be used to play the music straight into a midi file (yeah, just about every musical keyboard these days has the ability to record to midi).
