I want a small, fairly simple, garden wall built and am seeking a free software program which would help me sketch out some designs and help me estimate how many bricks are needed. Ideally i’d also print this out to show the builder. Any ideas?

Whatever happened to old pencil, paper and ruler???? Seems like the time searching for a website, you could draw it up and be done.

I agree with the others who suggest pen and paper. The google site is good, but without deadly accurate mouse control it is difficult to use.
Give your block layer a sketch of what you think you want and the sizes and let him figure it out.
He may suggest you have it a few inches shorter or longer to save the time for cutting blocks.
Make sure he gives you a quote for the job, and preferable get a couple of others.
Remember an 8″x4″ block is slightly smaller which is to allow for the morter.
A wall with bricks that size 10′ L x 6′ H will require 270 bricks.
The first gus of wind will blow it over. The block layer will know how to add extra blocks to reinforce the wall with abuttments

I have been a custom home builder for 30 years. If a client handed me some computer generated drawing of a garden wall I would give that client the phone number of my biggest competitor!
Talk to your builder and sit down for a hour and sketch out the idea that you both can agree upon. I say both, because your builder has to build your “fairly simple” little wall. Theory never trumps practice!

You could try the Gimphttp://www.gimp.org/
GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages. (more…)

Maybe not free, but for about $9, you can go to an Office Depot and look for a rack of discounted disks (usually near the other software). They had CAD drawing programs, landscaping programs……older versions and not very sophisticated, but they work. You may be able to find those things at other places where PC software is sold (i.e. Micro Electronics).
